!חברות וחברים יקרים שלום וברכה

The Jewish world marks Taanit Esther as International Aguna Day. Queen Esther did not enter her role willingly yet took enormous risks to save her people - an inspiring example for us today for social action on a national level.
Mavoi Satum is not willing to accept "sarvanut get" as a fact of life. We believe that we have the power to change the situation. We are working tirelessly - both in the public sphere and behind the scenes - to ensure that suitable rabbinic judges  (dayanim) are appointed, to mininmize discrimination against women and to provide fair services through the divorce process. At the same time we provide women with support and on going legal representation .
We are
currently fighting against the proposed legislation to expand the jurisdiction of the Rabbinical Courts. This proposal endangers the future of our country as a Jewish democratic state, specifically endangering women's rights. .
Once again we thak each and every one of you for your support and being  a partner in our endeavors.

Happy Purim

In View Of International Aguna Day a Proposal for
New Bill supported by Mavoi Satum

Mavoi Satum is leading the call to change the composition of the committee responsible for appointing rabbinical court judges (dayanim). Mavoi Satum is calling for the inclusion of a female representative which will lead to a real heterogeneous committiee and thus ensure its independence and the appointment of quality judges. Mavoi Satum in cooperation with MK Orit Zu Aretz drafted a bill to include an extra memeber on the committee. The member will be chosen from the Authority for the Status of Women from the Prime Minister's office.

 Ramit Alon - artist, actress
and a mesorevet get for 5 years

In this work of art I have depicted 3 figures who represent the obtuseness, callousness and the silence of the batei din (rabbinnic courts): The religious patriarchal institution forces women to give up their natural rights, whether it be their children or their assets, and buy their get with their "own blood". The get is the woman's only means of gainnig freedom.

Mother of 12 receives Get after 12 years

R is a teacher and a devoted mother of 12 children. Although she suffered abuse at the hands of her husband the bet din did not hurry to render a decision regarding her case. After 7 years of waiting the bet din finaly issued a chiyuv get - a verdict that obligates the husband to give a get - but did not issue sanctions against him.

R did not receive any maintenance from her husband and was the sole suppoter of her chuldren.
Mavoi Satum fought for her cause on all fronts: at the bet din; appeals regarding her maintenance and enforcement of court orders.

After 12 years of struggle R's husband finally gave her a get. R showed great courage throughout the long process and was a source of inspiration to many other women. She was accompanied through the years by a melava who provided her with emotional support.

Mavoi Satum is planning on publishing a book

"Deot Torah"
Mavoi Satum invites the public to submit articles for the publication of a book entitled Deot Torah on the topic of personal status and family issues.
Mavoi Satum intends on publishing varied and new halachic approaches to these topics. The articles may be responses to current halachic decisions or independent papers. The approaches may cover a range of styles - from feminist, sociological, literary, cultural, legal or halachic. The book will reflect modern orthodox halachic view points relating to family issues in a changing society.
Abstracts and manuscripts can be submited until May 31st 2010.
