Gay Pride Shabbat
On Friday, June 19, 2015, congregation Ohel Avraham held its third annual Pride Service, led by Rabbi Gabby Dagan, Rabbi Na'ama Dafni-Kellen and Boaz Sterenberg. The service consisted of songs and readings celebrating gay pride and equality. Some of the regular hymns in the prayer book were replaced with segments relevant to the theme. Ohel Avraham congregant Yavgeny Sorkin gave the sermon. Shabbat candles were lit by Ohel Avraham congregants who volunteer with various organizations supporting gay youth and young adults in the Haifa region.

“We must not ignore hatred, because where hate thrives, there will also be violence and bloodshed. We cannot be a free society if all of our people are not able to live their lives freely and proudly."
Yavgeny Sorkin, from his sermon
Special Bar/Bat Mitzvah Program
On Monday, June 8, 2015, the Leo Baeck Education Center celebrated a very special group Bar/Bat Mitzvah for eleven teenage boys and girls from disadvantaged families in Western Haifa (Ethiopians, Former Soviet Union and veteran immigrants), including one special needs student.
Recognizing that many teenagers who live in Western Haifa are unable to celebrate a Bar/Bat Mitzvah like their classmates due to family financial constraints, Leo Baeck initiated this project to help these youngsters formulate a positive identity and sense of empowerment.

During the month of June, the Library hosted an exhibit of original posters depicting Jewish culture and community life in Latvia, Ukraine, and Poland at the beginning of the 20th century.
